Overview:

Status epilepticus is a progressive condition characterised by evidence of progressive physiological stages, neuronal damage, and drug resistance. As it progresses, inflammation increases, the blood-brain barrier breaks down, and reactive oxygen species are generated. This session will explore preclinical evidence for these findings and their implications for treatment. It will then present evidence for the best initial treatment regimen, focussing on the use and misuse of benzodiazepines and the efficacy of second-line treatments. Finally, the treatment of drug-resistant status epilepticus will be discussed, highlighting the use of treatments that target pathology beyond the seizure to prevent secondary consequences of prolonged seizure activity.

2. To present the evidence underlying early hospital treatment
3. To discuss management strategies for drug resistant status epilepticus
