MND Academy webinar:
The role of genetics and assisted nutrition in MND
Overview:

Genetics is rapidly changing the care of people living with MND. The arrival of the first gene-targeted therapy, tofersen for SOD1-MND, means that genetic testing now has direct consequences for treatment. This session will give a practical overview of MND genetics for the multidisciplinary team. We will review the current landscape of targeted therapies, including antisense oligonucleotides and other approaches in clinical trials. We will also touch on how genetic research in Sheffield is identifying new therapeutic targets for the wider MND population.Managing nutrition is a vital part of caring for someone with MND, as the condition often causes swallowing difficulties and weight loss. This session will also discuss assisted nutrition in people living with MND and will outline a quality improvement project on the development of a gastrostomy pathway. Pathway mapping and streamlining of services to improve outcomes post PEG insertion will be discussed.

Objectives:
  1. Understand the main genetic causes of MND and when genetic testing should be offered
  2. Describe the new gene-targeted therapies in MND, and how to support patients and families with genetic results
  3. Understand the pathways for assisted nutrition in MND, including gastrostomy
