MS Leaders Academy
The MS Leadership Academy equips clinicians with the skills, tools and confidence to lead change both locally and nationally.
Leadership for lasting change
We believe in education which leads to lasting transformation. Sometimes, effecting change requires not only passion and commitment, but leadership. In response to that need, this Academy equips clinicians with the skills, tools and confidence to lead change both locally and nationally.
This year's leadership class has developed a bold solution to the challenges facing the MS community, including the rise in emergency hospital admissions.
First identified as part of the 'Raising the Bar for MS' national initiative, we recognised that to see real, lasting change in services, we needed to invest in leadership. This Academy seeks to inspire, encourage and equip healthcare practitioners to both lead for change in their own areas, and inspire their peers to become leaders in turn.
Leading from experience, this Faculty is formed of healthcare practitioners with training and experience in true change leadership. Co-developed with leadership and coaching experts specialising in healthcare service change, this Academy is led by those who continue to lead change in their own local services.
Transformational change is at the heart of our educational ethos, and in a course inspiring change leadership, the intermodule project has never been more essential. Differing from our other project work, the full class must work together on a shared project, drawing on different skillsets, working as a team, and learning to lead change collectively.

The multiple sclerosis (MS) field is rapidly expanding and the challenge to deliver high quality, cost-effective care is becoming increasingly complex. To navigate the landscape of MS service provision in the UK, effective leadership is required. However, the skills required to become a leader capable of impactful change are suboptimally developed at a time when they are the most needed.
The MS Academy has recognised this critical training gap and launched a 6-month multifaceted leadership programme tailored to MS experts in February 2020.

Goals of the leadership programme:
- Identify and develop future leaders from the MS field who have little leadership experience
- Develop and implement a mentoring program between participants and established leaders
- Enhance skills of those who have already assumed or are about to assume leadership roles within their Institutions, the MS field, and, more broadly, the field of neurology

First Leadership cohort culminates with essential retrospective
Our first cohort of the Leadership MasterClass graduated on Friday 12th November with a formal dinner at the prestigious St Hugh's College, Oxford. The dinner was an opportunity to network and revisit the achievements of the last 18 months, looking back on a unique MasterClass extended and adapted to the changing environment of the pandemic and made possible thanks to Roche's enthusiasm and financial support.
