Paula Hewat
Paula qualified as a general nurse in 1990 and has worked in acute medicine but mainly within the sphere of Elderly rehab, both in the wards and Day Hospital. Paula set up the Parkinsons Nurse service in NHS A&A in 2008 and has worked as the Lead Nurse since then. She currently manages a staff of 5 and a caseload of 850 patients with Parkinson’s and related disorders, from diagnosis through to end of life. Paula is an independent prescriber, having completed that in 2009 she was also supported by junior colleagues to complete the course. Being an independent prescriber makes it much more efficient and indeed safer to run Nurse led clinics, whether they be face to face, virtual or telephone. An interest in Parkinsons began very early in her career, she found it fascinating that someone could do something well but in what appeared to be the next 5 minutes, couldn’t even attempt to do the same thing.
