New clinical leaders for neuroscience

This month saw brand new clinical directors appointed within the neurosciences - two of them. National clinical director for neurology Dr Niranjana Nirmalananthan is a neurologist at St George's in London, whilst the national clinical director for spinal surgery and neurosurgery is consultant spinal surgeon Mr David Cumming, who practises at East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust.

The posts come as a result of the NHS England clinical leadership review. During this review Neurology Academy added our voice to the many others calling for urgent prioritisation of neurology leadership to drive change, improve integration and ensure the appropriate planning and delivery of, and access to, services that people with neurological conditions and their families desperately need.

The Neurological Alliance has highlighted the urgent requirements for our new clinical leaders in a press release. Both Dr Nirmalananathan and Mr Cumming have stated their commitments to reducing unwarranted variance, improving integration and tackling health inequalities. We wish them the very best, and look forward to seeing their leadership play out in the coming months.
