Epilepsy Academy session 1

DEE: seizures and syndromes from children to adults
Prof Simona Balestrini, associate professor of child neurology and psychiatry, Neuroscience and Medical Genetics Department, Meyer Children's Hospital - University of Florence

DEE in adults: beyond seizures
Prof Guido Rubboli, clinical professor of clinical epileptology, Institute of Clinical Medicine, University of Copenhagen

Session overview:

DEEs are burdensome conditions, individually rare but together often presenting important challenges in clinical care for people with epilepsy. Though their recognition, diagnosis, genetics and management is often well established in paediatric care, transition and adult care are often additionally challenging as the epilepsy, comorbidities and salient issues may be different in adult care and have typically been less well documented. The purpose of this webinar is to share learning about DEEs and their multifaceted management challenges in adulthood.

Session objectives:
  • To appreciate that most children with DEEs survive into adulthood and are therefore important for adult and paediatric specialists to know about them and consider DEE as a diagnosis in adults.
  • To understand how epilepsy phenotypes may change from paediatric to adult presentations, and the consequences of such evolution, where it occurs.
  • To learn about additional features and issues in DEEs in adulthood, some of which may not manifest in childhood.

  • How important is to provide rescue medication to these patients in the community setting and what is the current management during transition and in adults and recommendations?
  • How the family or other caregivers’ epilepsy patients should be empowered about transition care and prolonged convulsive seizures management?
