Dr Niranjanan Nirmalananthan
Dr Niran Nirmalananthan is the National Clinical Director for Neurology at NHS England and co‑clinical lead for the GIRFT Neurology programme. He chairs the NHS England Neurology Clinical Reference Group and co‑chairs the National Neurosciences Transformation Board.
He is a Consultant Neurologist at St George’s University Hospitals and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at St George’s, University of London, with subspecialty interests in neuromuscular disorders and headache.
Dr Nirmalananthan is Group Clinical Lead for Specialised Services at the St George’s, Epsom and St Helier Hospitals Group. He previously co‑chaired the South West London and Surrey Neurosciences Network (2020–2025), served as Clinical Director of the Atkinson Morley Regional Neurosciences Centre (2019–2023), and was clinical lead for Neurology and Neurophysiology at St George’s (2016–2019).
He graduated in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge, studied Medicine at King’s College London, and completed a PhD in Neuroscience at the Institute of Neurology, University College London. He undertook higher specialist training in neurology at St George’s Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, London.
