Celebrating our 3rd Neuropharmacy MasterClass project winners
Event reports
Joela Mathews and Rachel Dorsey-Campbell
We recently completed our 3rd Neuropharmacy MasterClass, where delegates presented the outcomes of their workplace projects, demonstrating how they are translating their learning into practice. It was inspiring to see the dedication and passion delegates brought to improving neurology services and patient care in their local settings.
“I really enjoyed hearing and seeing what the work colleagues have done.”
“Lots of lovely and great projects, and an excellent opportunity to learn from each other and encourage good practice.”
“Very interesting projects with good ideas to take away and investigate in my trust.”

The winning project, as voted by peers, was presented by Tyler Allen and Emma Stephenson from South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Their work focused on reviewing blood monitoring requirements for disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) in MS, with a goal to streamline processes, reduce duplication and cut unnecessary testing. The team identified opportunities to improve local protocols, aligning them more closely with national guidelines and licensing requirements. By reducing over-monitoring and simplifying workflows, they calculated potential cost savings of approximately £86,470 per year, while also easing the burden on patients and staff. This project highlights the value of continuous review and local optimisation in delivering efficient, patient-centred care. Congratulations to Tyler and Emma!
Two further outstanding projects were recognised as runners-up:
Evaluation of antibiotic and beta-blocker prescribing in patients with myasthenia gravis – identifying agents with potential to exacerbate symptoms, by Xin Yi Thum, advanced clinical pharmacist at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
Optimisation of intravenous immunoglobulin doses to reflect national guidance, by Rebecca Murphy, neurology and ophthalmology specialist pharmacist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust
Congratulations to all delegates who completed the MasterClass. All posters from this and previous cohorts are now available to view in our projects section on our website, a growing library of innovative ideas from neuropharmacists across the country.
In addition to project work, module 2 featured expert-led sessions on Parkinson’s and epilepsy, with a focus on practical case studies. The sessions were well received, offering guidance and tools to support pharmacists in clinical decision-making.
“The course is very well structured and includes perfectly relevant information. Having a full day on PD and epilepsy was great, as I was able to learn a lot due to the amount of detail.”
“I had an amazing experience at the MasterClass, especially as a pharmacist relatively new to the speciality. It complemented the completion of my independent prescribing course within neurology, and it will definitely be used as a stepping stone for future career progression.”

Module 1, held in November last year, covered multiple sclerosis, headache disorders, motor neurone disease and other cross-cutting topics relevant to neuropharmacy practice. Now in its third cohort, the Neuropharmacy MasterClass continues to evolve in line with the changing treatment landscape for neurological conditions. Pharmacists are uniquely placed to support the delivery of neurology services – educating patients, promoting adherence, initiating or advising on treatment plans, and monitoring therapy safety and efficacy. Designed to strengthen the confidence and clinical knowledge of pharmacists, the course aims to maximise their role within the multidisciplinary team.
We are now preparing for the next Neuropharmacy MasterClass, with module 1 planned for 2026 and module 2 expected to follow later in 2026 or in 2027, and we would love to hear from you! If you are interested in attending, or contributing to the future direction of the course, we invite you to register your interest.

The Neuropharmacy Academy 2021
Developing neuropharmacists, supporting collaborative care
Knowledgeable pharmacists can initiate or support new treatment pathways, play an important role in patient education, medicine adherence, efficacy and safety, and provide advice to other healthcare professionals involved in the person's care. This Academy recognises the value of this essential role, and seeks to enhance pharmacist's clinical skills and build their confidence in managing a range of neurological conditions.
