National Neurology Transformation Meeting 2025: a landmark gathering highlights community neurology and health equity
Event reportsOn a bright January day, clinicians, commissioners, and people with neurological conditions from across the UK gathered for the much-anticipated National Neurology Transformation Meeting (NNTM) 2025 delivered by Neurology Academy in partnership with NHSE and The Neurological Alliance – a meeting that would set the tone for the future of neurology services. The energy in the room was palpable as colleagues reconnected, new faces were welcomed, and a shared sense of purpose filled the air.
One of the often forgotten elements of the delivery of neurology services is that of community neurology. At NNTM 2025 a focus on community neurology highlighted the importance it has in the management of the 1 in 6 people who live with a neurological disorder today. Sue Thomas took to the stage at the meeting drawing on her extensive experience and speaking passionately about the urgent need to move beyond hospital walls and bring care closer to home. “Neurological conditions are now a leading cause of disability,” she reminded us, “and our services must evolve to meet people where they are.” She outlined the NHS 10 year plan three key shifts in care – prevention, community-based support, and digital transformation – urging everyone to embrace a more holistic, person-centred approach.

Throughout the day the conversation turned to the real-world challenges faced by people with neurological conditions and professionals alike. Sue shared a moving quote from someone with Parkinson's, highlighting the importance of self-care and community support discussing the barriers to effective service provision, from fragmented pathways to the need for upskilling community teams. There was a clear consensus: collaboration across sectors is needed, learning from successful stroke models, and investing in local resources is essential to delivering the right care in the right place.
Health equity was a central theme, brought to life by Dr Giles Ratcliffe and Dr Michelle Horridge. Their session delved into the stark inequalities that persist in neurology – how geography, social circumstances, and protected characteristics can shape a person’s journey through the healthcare system. Practical solutions were shared, from targeted appointment reminders and travel support to the innovative use of AI in reducing missed appointments. Case studies from around the UK illustrated the power of data-driven approaches and community engagement in closing the gap for underserved populations.
Further speakers with a community neurology focus showcased inspiring examples of service transformation in action. Christine Hyde and Dr Michelle Balaratnam shared details of the Greater Manchester and North Central London community neurology services where collaborative models of community neuro rehabilitation have delivered real change. Their work, co-produced with people with neurological conditions and professionals, has led to more personalised, needs-led care and significant system savings. The integration of primary, community, and specialist services, supported by robust training and education, stood out as a blueprint for others to follow.
As the meeting drew to a close, Dr Niranjanan Nirmalananthan reflected on the spirit of collaboration that defined the event, encouraging everyone to stay engaged and share their ideas for the future. “This is just the beginning,” he said, inviting feedback and suggestions to shape next year’s agenda.
The NNTM 2025 was more than just a meeting; it was a celebration of progress, a forum for honest discussion, and a launchpad for ongoing innovation. With renewed energy and a shared vision, the neurology community left inspired to continue the journey towards equitable, high-quality care for all.
