NEWS flow chart decision support tool and Parkinson's

Knowledge

A new tool, developed by patient-facing clinicians, offers a simple way for hospital staff to identify patients that may be suitable for discharge, and to suggest alternative ways of providing ongoing care for that person.

The NEWS Flow Chart Decision Support Tool has been designed to support ‘balanced risk’ discharge decision-making on a 'day to day' basis.

Providing a clear framework for decision-making, and encouraging appropriate planning and use of discharge pathways, the tool aims to optimise the best care for the patient, and in the most appropriate setting for them.

Parkinson's Academy Faculty member Dr Richard Genever offers a helpful case-based discussion of the tool in practice on the NHS Improvement blog.

The flowchart itself can be viewed in an online document here, or via the FutureNHS Collaboration Platform.
