Reflecting on our first Spasticity MasterClass

Event reports
29 Nov 2024

The very first Spasticity MasterClass took place recently, and we’re thrilled to share it was a resounding success! Designed for healthcare professionals with a strong foundation in spasticity care, this hybrid event provided an opportunity to deepen expertise and build confidence in managing complex cases.

We welcomed 30 delegates in Sheffield while nearly 40 more joined virtually through our live stream. With specialities spanning neurology, rehabilitation, geriatrics and stroke – and a strong representation of allied health professionals – it was inspiring to see such enthusiasm for gaining confidence in assessing, treating and managing spasticity. Many delegates had already completed our Spasticity Basics online course, and this MasterClass offered an opportunity to deepen their understanding and tackle more complex cases. Delegates were introduced to advanced approaches in diagnosis, assessment and goal setting, and explored the full spectrum of treatment options, including pharmacological, therapeutic, and surgical interventions like selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR), as well as optimising transitions across services and building effective spasticity services.

Delegate feedback:

“Interesting and good base to look at the pathophysiology. A lot of community professionals do not have access to attending ward rounds and this level of detail discussion at the acute phase.”

“Enjoyed the refresh of GAS goal and now understand how to work out a percentage behind the scores. I have used these for 15 years and never completed this part of the scoring.”

“Very practical and much to take from this that can be applied to clinical practice immediately.”

“Excellent case study presentations to provoke thoughts and conversations. Stephen's photos displayed a large number of patient cases I have seen and often felt helpless to treat.”

“This session really helped my learning. It's the reality of what we face as clinicians but often faced with so many variables that impact on our decision making.”

“Really important session as non-pharmacologic interventions can be overlooked. Definitely gave me a lot to think about with regards to posture and considering standing frames.”

Spasticity is a complex symptom caused by damage to the brain or spinal cord, leading to uncontrollable muscle tightness. It affects individuals with a wide range of neurological or spinal conditions, including chronic spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, stroke, cerebral palsy and traumatic brain injury. Given its variability, spasticity can be difficult to identify and manage, contributing to inconsistencies in care and outcomes. Spasticity Academy’s Faculty addresses these challenges by helping healthcare professionals raise the standard of care across the UK.

The MasterClass featured an incredible line-up of speakers from various MDT roles, promoting a whole-person approach and a shared understanding among non-specialists and specialists alike. Delegates were encouraged to become 'Spasticity Sherlocks,' solving complex cases through multidisciplinary team-style discussions. It was fantastic bringing together the skills and knowledge of the MDT, showcased by both our expert speakers and engaged delegates.

“Teaching on the Spasticity Academy sessions has enabled me to demonstrate the role OTs have to play as well as enhance my own learning.” – Lynsay Duke, speaker

“Great to chat it all through with several MDT clinicians in the audience. We all see it differently & that adds to the learning.”

“Really good content with a wide variety of information from different HCPs. Would definitely recommend!”

Delegates praised the MasterClass for its interactive format and holistic focus, with many finding the insights from the MDT invaluable. The event also highlighted the critical role of research and innovation in spasticity care, offering delegates a glimpse into future trajectories for treatment and service development.
