Background info

Bladder and bowel problems affect people with a range of neurological conditions, including MS, Parkinson's, dementia, stroke, and brain or spinal cord injuries. They:

  • are commonly experienced and can have a significant impact on quality of life (Panicker 2020)

  • can impact or interrelate with other neurological symptoms like mood, mobility, sleep, work, and social engagement (Be Bladder Aware 2022)

  • are one of the highest causes of emergency admission in the NHS, the rate of admissions almost doubling from 2013-2018 (NHS 2018).

  • need greater focus to alleviate both negative patient experience and the financial burden of urinary dysfunction on the NHS (Thomas 2024)

Sexual dysfunction is common in men and women with neurological diseases and affects quality of life (Panicker et al 2024).

The hope is that, through this targeted education, we can in turn improve patient education, increase prevention and early intervention, and minimise impact both for the patient, and the NHS as a whole.

Overview of MasterClass

A unique opportunity to be part of a Uro-neurology MasterClass with expert speakers from various disciplines will offer up complex cases for discussion over a two-day period, all designed to deepen delegates' understanding across prevention, causes, implications, and management of neurology-related bladder, bowel and sexual function problems.

Each case will help unpick specific challenges and clinical skills required in practice, considering assessment, treatment and management within the wider context of a whole-person approach, taking into account a wide range of interrelating factors such as mental health, barriers to adherence, strategies for carers and integrating support for sexual dysfunction.

"The Uro-neurology MasterClass aims to educate healthcare professionals to contribute to the new era of the NHS: one that prioritises preventative rather than reactive care. Through this transformative national education, we hope to empower professionals to better identify and address uro-neurological issues."

Ruth Stross, head of nursing, Neurology Academy

“We value a multidisciplinary approach to managing bladder, bowel and sexual dysfunction following neurological disease, and the masterclass allows for faculty and delegates across neurology, urology, urogynaecology, gastroenterology, rehabilitation medicine, geriatrics and general practice to share their specialist knowledge and personal experiences. We use case based vignettes to make this a practical session so that knowledge acquired can be implemented into clinical practice."

Prof Jalesh Panicker, consultant neurologist, University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
