Dementia MasterClass Bangladesh

Who is the course for?

Dementia is one of the leading causes of death and disability. Worldwide, around 50 million people have dementia, and nearly 60% live in low-middle income countries. In many countries, dementia is not well recognised nor managed. The impact of families and carers is significant.

We invite clinicians based in Bangladesh to apply for this specialised course to increase their clinical skills in the diagnosis and management of people with dementia in their country.

This course is ideal for doctors working with older adults who are at risk of dementia or who may have developed dementia. This includes specialist registrars or consultants in old age psychiatry, care of the elderly or neurology, as well as internists and general practitioners (GPs).

From this course, delegates will gain:

• An introduction to the clinical syndrome of dementia, its epidemiology and risk factors

• An understanding of the clinical aspects of diagnosis of people at different stages of dementia

• An introduction to assessment tools for cognitive, functional, and behavioural impairment

• Case-based discussions of different types of dementias

• An introduction to treatment and management of dementia (medication and non-medication-based)

• Discussions of care pathway planning for people living with dementia, including information and support for family carers

• An understanding of community support services such as day care and residential care

What is expected of delegates?

This is a virtual course, conducted online via a mixture of interactive and self-directed learning. Delegates will be expected to:

• Complete each module of the course, provided monthly and comprising a video session and additional reading

• Complete a short self-assessment at the end of each module

• Attend the live sessions and participate actively in the discussion

• Undertake a small service development project over the course of 5 months around the topic of dementia

• Present their service development project in the final class meeting in December 2021.

Course leaders will be mentors to students throughout the course and for 6 months after the course to support development of dementia services. Course material will be in English. Interactive sessions will be English and Bengali.

Timescales

• The course will be run over 5 months, from 1st August - 24th December 2021.

• Self-directed learning material will be sent to delegates at the start of each month.

• On the last Friday of the month from 5-7pm, a two-hour online live interactive teaching session will be conducted with course leaders and delegates.
