Course overview
Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a rare neuromuscular disorder that causes muscle weakness and excessive muscle fatigue. This free online course will equip nurses with the essential knowledge and skills to manage patients affected by this condition.
Recognising the challenges that nurses face in encountering and managing MG in clinical settings, this course was developed to address these gaps and to ensure that the education provided is recognised for career development.
Through expert speakers, patient stories and case discussions, the programme covers both basic and advanced topics, making it suitable for nurses new to MG as well as those specialising in neuromuscular disorders.
How is the course taught?
The course is fully virtual and accessed through an online learning portal, allowing delegates to progress at their own pace. It can be completed in a concentrated period over a few days or spread out across several weeks or months, depending on each learner's schedule.
The course is structured into two tiers to cater to different levels of knowledge and experience. Tier 1 offers a basic understanding of MG, including pathophysiology, treatment, and management. Tier 2 delves into more advanced topics, such as treating patients in adolescence and pregnancy, rehabilitation and service development.
Both tiers are delivered by senior MG specialists through a blend of self-directed learning activities, reflective practice exercises, and curated resources such as articles, case studies, and relevant websites. This ensures that participants gain a comprehensive understanding of MG and its management.
Who is the course for?
Tier 1 is open to all nurses, regardless of experience level. It is ideal for:
Nursing staff interested in neuromuscular disorders like MG who were currently working in hospital or community services who want more in-depth knowledge of MG with the aim of applying for specialist posts
Nurses who have just come to work in neuromuscular services or MG who are building their baseline understanding of MG
Tier 2 is designed for:
- Experienced nurses already working in neuromuscular services or an MG post who are wanting to develop more in depth knowledge and network with other MG nurses
Course structure and reflective practice
The course is tiered to ensure that learners receive education suited to their current level. Nurses at the Tier 2 level can access both Tier 1 and Tier 2 content, while those at Tier 1 must first complete all Tier 1 modules before moving on to Tier 2. This progression ensures that foundational knowledge is fully absorbed before tackling more complex material.
After each module, delegates are required to complete a self-directed reflective practice exercise. These short written reflections help consolidate learning by encouraging participants to think about how the new knowledge will apply to their practice. Completion of these exercises is necessary to receive a certificate at the end of each tier and to move from Tier 1 to Tier 2.
Programme - last updated 18th October
Cost of the course
This course is free to attend for nurses in the UK. Applicants who are not from the nursing profession will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
